We are a property management firm in the Central East Bay Area, specializing in leasing and management of about 400 apartments, condominiums and houses – mainly in the Berkeley and Oakland area.
Jonathan Weldon | Broker/Owner
I am Jonathan Weldon. Broker/Owner and Founder of Cedar Properties. I was born in Koror, Palau, but mostly grew up in Stockton, California. When I was twelve my family moved on to a sailboat and a couple of years later (after much much work on the boat) sailed to Hawaii, where I spent my high school years. Ended up graduating from the same school as President Obama, Punahou Academy.
One of my first loves growing up was real estate. I was always fascinated by how much impact it has on our lives – visually, emotionally and financially.
After completing my high school education at Punahou Academy in Honolulu, I returned to California and enrolled in Junior College in my hometown of Stockton. In 1991, I transferred to U.C. Berkeley and subsequently graduated in 1993. After graduating, I flirted with a few options for my future, including becoming a lawyer, but ended up coming back to my original love, Real Estate.
I worked hard to garner a General Contractor’s license in 1999 but during that time got some exposure to small real estate management companies and really felt that my skills and demeanor were far better suited to that profession. In 2002 I opened up my own management company, Cedar Properties, and have never looked back.
After all these years, I still really enjoy this profession. I feel like I am always in the middle of two groups of people (residents and owners) that are so passionate about their experiences with their buildings that they own and/or reside in.
I am also very blessed to be the father of three amazing young men and have enjoyed countless hours coaching and supporting them in sports (baseball, flag football, basketball, soccer) and their other love, theater.
Harrison Smith | Property Manager
A native to the East Bay and a graduate of UC Berkeley, Harrison started his career at Cedar Properties in 2010, after several years of pursuing his dream of becoming a professional athlete.
With little real estate experience Harrison began in the company as an assistant to the broker, and within 2 years he had obtained his real estate license and began working his way up through the company where he now holds the position of property manager.
Over the last six years Harrison has gained valuable experience working along side Jonathan, and has been able to utilize his interpersonal and organization skills along with his work ethic to create a successful real estate career.
Harrison enjoys the opportunities Cedar Properties has given him to build a career, and loves the close knit family feel of the company and how dedicated it is to offering great service to its property owners and tenants.
When not working Harrison enjoys traveling with his family, playing outdoors with his dogs, and training/ teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Nancy Lai | Bookkeeper
Nancy Lai is the Bookkeeper at Cedar Properties for 7 years after answering a Craigslist ad. She is a UC Berkeley grad (History), and enjoys baking cookies occasionally.
It is quite educational to work for a small local company to see and hear firsthand how we directly affect the lives of our tenants, vendors, clients and the surrounding community. Equally important is Cedar Properties’ dedication to integrity, transparency and respect in our interactions with tenants, vendors and clients. A day in the office is never dull: stuff happens constantly–some predictable, others not.
Rose Roque | Receptionist / Administrator
Rose Roque is the Office Manager-Processor for Cedar Properties since March 2015.
She has interned for the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office and aided in the campaigns for former L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa (mayoral), former California State Treasurer Phil Angelides (gubernatorial), former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (presidential) and several state initiatives.
She has also interned and worked for property management companies since 2005 in both Los Angeles and the Bay Area in California. She finally found her peace and contentment in terms of her career by working for Cedar Properties due to the company’s technically advanced practices and— most importantly— utmost respect for employee, tenant, and property owner rights—a delicate balance lead by its founder Jonathan Weldon.
She is currently working on getting a Real Estate Salesperson license.
Paul Wilson | Maintenance Supervisor
As a mid-Western transplant to California 19 years ago, I maintain my core values, which include a belief in providing service with a smile and swift resolutions. I have worked in many different fields over the years, including professional coaching, the entertainment industry, and the medical field. My latest foray into the real estate business is a great way to combine many of the skills I have learned along the professional road of life. Cedar Properties, under the leadership of Jonathan Weldon, is the perfect working environment to put this experience into action.
In the six months I have been with the company, I have been fortunate to find myself part of a squad that functions like a well-oiled machine. We are a team in the true sense; helping each other out as needed, each of us exhibiting leadership at the right time and right place to support not only one another, but to provide the best possible service to property owners and tenants alike. This is the type of work place that gives small business a good name.
After taking a few years off to work on a film and raise my kids, Jonathan offered me a job with no experience in property management whatsoever. I embraced the challenge and have found the business to be both rewarding and interesting. While this business may have a swift turnover rate, such rules do not apply to Cedar Properties, where I can see myself working with this same staff for years to come. I am also fortunate to work with many vendors who provide outstanding services to the communities of Berkeley and Oakland.
Everybody who has ever rented an apartment knows that there are all manner of property owners, each with their own set of rules. I like to think that Cedar Properties is the rock-solid bridge between owners and tenants; a bridge that supports communication, transparency and fairness.
